Marshall Islands. Despite the defeat of the incumbent government in the November 2015 parliamentary elections, government supporters managed to get their candidate, Casten Nemra, elected new president and head of government. At the end of the month, however, Nemra lost a vote of confidence in Parliament and was forced to resign. He was replaced by Hilda C. Heine, who thus became the country's first female president.

2016 Marshall Islands

In February, a state of emergency was announced because of the drought that plagued the kingdom for months. At the end of April, US President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency, opening for state emergency aid from the United States. According to countryaah, the water shortage in the country was exacerbated by the fact that much of the freshwater was contaminated by bacteria and thus neither suitable for drinking nor even bathing.

In October, the International Court of Justice in The Hague (ICJ) rejected the lawsuit filed by the Marshall Islands to compel Pakistan, India and the United Kingdom to comply with the disarmament requirements laid down in the Non-Proliferation Treaty of 1968. Other countries that the Marshall Islands wanted to go to court China, France, the Russian Federation and the United States have not responded to the lawsuit.
