Saint Lucia

Yearbook 2016

Saint Lucia. In June elections were held for Parliament. According to countryaah, the distribution of seats was the reverse compared to after the 2011 election. This time it was the Conservative United Workers' Party (UWP) that received eleven of the total 17 seats against six for the left-wing Liberal Saint Lucia's Workers Party (SLP). Thus, the trend of power change in each election during the 2000s continued.

2016 Saint Lucia

In March, an agreement was signed between Saint Lucia and Barbados. The two island states are so close to each other that their possible territorial sea overlaps. A state can claim a territorial sea of up to twelve nautical miles off the baselines that delimit the state's inland water. Therefore, the neighbors have had to agree on the boundary of each state's territorial sea. Present at the negotiations were representatives of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, who in 2015 signed a similar agreement with Barbados.

In April, Saint Lucia and the European Commission signed an agreement to provide the island with more than EUR 6 million. The money will go to a project to improve the infrastructure in Saint Lucia to make it more resilient to extreme weather.
